Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (7-11-0, 1-1-0 CHA) defeated visiting Niagara (5-11-4, 1-1-0 CHA), 4-2, on Sunday at City Ice Arena. The win snapped a four-game losing streak against the Purple Eagles in the series.

Similar to last night, Niagara scored the first two goals in the contest by Lisa Agozzino and Katie Gray. But the Warriors would cut the deficit to one before the first intermission on a goal by freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds), who scored off a rebound by junior forward Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ontario/Toronto Aeros). The assist would be one of three for Wilson.

The Warriors would score the next three goals, two in the second period, en route to the victory. Wayne State had goals from sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres), sophomore defenseman Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ontario/London Juniors), and senior forward Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres). Poyton's goal was beautiful as she and Boal did a give-and-go and scored on a one-timer. Vanderhoeven's marker, the game-winner, came from a slap shot from the blue line and beat Niagara senior goaltender Allison Rutledge, who was screened on the play.

The Warriors were 4-for-8 on the power play, while Niagara was 0-for-6.

Rutledge made 23 saves, while junior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 29 saves, including all 17 in the third period.

Wayne State will not play again until 2007 when it hosts Colgate on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6, at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively. Friday's contest will be at City Ice Arena, while Saturday's tilt will be held at the Taylor Sportsplex.
