There will be an unbeaten streak broken this weekend as both the Wayne State University women's hockey team (9-14-1, 1-3-0 CHA) and Robert Morris (9-13-2, 1-3-0 CHA) have a two-game unbeaten streak. The Warriors are 1-0-1 in that span, while the Colonials are 2-0-0. The two teams battle at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27. Both games are set to start at 7:35 p.m.
The Series
Wayne State leads the all-time series, 4-0-0, as last season was Robert Morris' first as a program and in College Hockey America.
Behind the Bench
Jim Fetter is in his fourth season at Wayne State and has a record of 51-62-13.
In his first year as the women's head coach at Robert Morris, Nate Handrahan has a record of 9-13-2.
Scouting the Warriors
Wayne State won and tied at Quinnipiac, 4-4 in overtime on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday.
In Friday's contest, after spotting QU a 1-0 lead, sophomore forward Brandi Frakie and junior defenseman Danielle Wilson put the visitors up, 2-1. Wilson's marker was her first since Feb. 12, 2005, at Niagara. The Bobcats scored three of the next five goals, with WSU sophomore forward Melissa Boal tying the game at three and recording her first collegiate game-tying marker with just 1:28 left in regulation.
Wayne State came out firing on Saturday, scoring three straight goals, two early in the second period, on tallies from sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro, senior forward Laura Monk and freshman forward Katrina Protopapas. Sophomore forward Amanda Hungle enjoyed her first series of the new year by scoring her first game-winning goal of the season. Protopapas, after being held to just one assist in the team's first 21 games, is on a three-game point streak (1-2--3).
Boal leads the team in goals (18), points (29), power-play goals (9) and short-handed goals (1), while DiPietro is tops with 20 assists.
Junior netminder Valery Turcotte has seen the majority of time in goal and has a record of 6-11-1, a 3.76 goals-against average and a .882 save percentage.
Wayne State has converted 27-of-127 (.213) man-advantage opportunities and killed 94-of-125 (.752) opponent chances.
Scouting the Colonials
Robert Morris was victorious on Sunday at Northeastern, 3-2 in overtime. The Colonials never trailed the contest as junior forward Maria Olausson put RMU up, 1-0, in the first period and freshman forward Jessica Riley gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage in the second period. Riley then played hero in overtime as she scored her first career game-winning goal with just seven seconds left in the extra session.
With nine wins, Robert Morris has already won four more games this season than in its inaugural season last year.
Robert Morris has six players with 10 or more points and three players lead the team with 19 points (Alissa Dorman, Megan Picnic and Olausson). Dorman and Kristin Miles are tops with 12 goals, while Olausson leads the team with 16 assists. Morgan Beikirch and Jordan Riley have the squad's only short-handed goals.
Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin and freshman Heather Rossi have shared time in net for the Colonials. McLaughlin has a record of 6-8-2, a 2.93 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. Rossi has a record of 3-5-0, a 3.07 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.
Robert Morris has converted 21-of-170 (.124) power-play opportunities and have killed 122-of-141 (.865) opponent chances.
