The Program
The Wayne State University Female Hockey School is designed to help aspiring female hockey players between the ages of 9-18. We will devote as much care and attention to our novice player as we will to our gifted athlete. Students will be grouped according to ability and age.
On Ice
The first session each day is devoted to individual skill development. Focus will be on power skating, puck handling/protection, passing and shooting, checking/angling and scoring. Each players skating stride will be evaluated by our professional coaching staff.
The second session will be devoted to game concepts. Offensive and defensive concepts such as puck possession/movement, cycling, breakouts, zone entry will be taught.
WSU Camp Philosophy
Our goal is to provide your daughter with the highest caliber instruction available. We limit the size of each age group to guarantee a proper student/instructor ratio. This allows for more repetitions of each individual skill. Our priority is to ensure that all of our students, regardless of ability, skate away from our school with increased confidence in their skills and a greater understanding and passion for this wonderful sport.
Staff
You will not find a camp coaching staff comparable to what we can provide here in Michigan. Our staff includes instructors with Professional, Olympic and Collegiate coaching and playing experience. All have extensive hockey school backgrounds.
Jim Fetter, head women's ice hockey coach at Wayne State University, will be entering his 5th season behind the bench in the fall of 2007. After 1 year as an assistant at the University of Maine and 3 years as the top assistant coach at Mercyhurst College, Fetter took over the WSU Women's program. A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Fetter is also heavily involved with Hockey Canada. In the spring of 2006 he was selected to participate as part of Hockey Canada's National Coaching Pool where he coached at the Under-22 and National Team Development Camps.
Grant Kimball serves as the Associate Head Women's Hockey Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at WSU. Grant will enter his 5th year behind the bench in the fall of `07. Grant was the Assistant Women's Coach for Lake Forest College from 2001-2003 before coming to WSU. Grant is heavily involved with youth hockey in Michigan. He serves as Director of the Michigan Girls Regional Development Camp and in 2005 was Co-Coach at the USA Hockey Girls' Select U14 Camp in Rochester, NY.
Mare MacDougall is the Assistant Coach and Academic/Video Coordinator for the WSU Women's Program. Mare will be entering her 5th year with the program in the fall of '07 as well. Mare played two years for Mercyhurst. Prior to playing at Mercyhurst, Mare attended Canada's Olympic Oval High Performance Program in Calgary, Alberta. Mare has worked the Michigan Girls Regional Dev. Camp, CanAm hockey schools and with the Saskatchewan Provincial Under 18 Female Development Program.
