Wayne State women's hockey head coach Jim Fetter announced that two prospective student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at Wayne State University in the fall of 2006.
"We are fortunate to have signed two very skilled defensemen," said Fetter, "and we will be looking for them to step in and contribute right away."
Tegan Schroeder, a 5'5" defenseman from Lumsden, Sask., played two years of varsity hockey for the Hounds of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, where she helped the team win two Saskatchewan Provincial Female Midget AA Championships as well as two Western Canadian Shield Female Midget Championships. Schroeder was named the team's best defenseman in 2005 and 2006.
Schroeder was also a member of the Team Saskatchewan U-18 squad and competed at nationals in Salmon Arm, B.C., the last two seasons.
Schroeder, who plans to major in education, is the youngest child of Adrian and Susan Schroeder.
Joining her on the blueline next season will be Christine Jefferson, a 5'6" defenseman from Nepean, Ont. Jefferson played four years on the varsity hockey squad at Merivale High School, and earned such accolades as the coaches' award and team MVP. She served as the team captain the last two seasons.
Jefferson, who also played on Merivale's touch football team for three years, is the youngest of three children of Charles Jefferson and Karen McKimmon.
"Tegan and Christine have a lot of potential, and we are looking forward to developing them and making them better hockey players," said Fetter.
Schroeder and Jefferson will join fall signees Chelsea Burnett and Brandi Frakie in the freshman class for the 2006-07 campaign.
"This is a good class coming in, thanks to the great recruiting work by Grant Kimball and Mare MacDougall," said Fetter. "This program will continue to take steps in the right direction."
Last season, the Warriors finished with a record of 14-16-5, their second-highest win total in school history. They also posted a mark of 6-4-2 in College Hockey America, earning a second seed in the CHA Tournament.
