Detroit, Mich. - Two members of the Wayne State women's hockey teams were selected as College Hockey America players of the week. Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) was named CHA Defensive Player of the Week while freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) was named Rookie of the Week. The awards were Turcotte's first and Frakie's second this season
Turcotte saved 61 of 64 shots in a weekend split against No. 9 Princeton. She made 37 saves in Friday's 4-2 come-from-behind win, including all 17 in the third period, earning her first star honors. She followed that performance with 24 saves in Saturday's 1-0 loss, the only goal coming short-handed. For the weekend, her goals-against average was 1.52 with a .953 save percentage.
Brandi Frakie
Frakie recorded her second-career game-winning goal in Friday's victory. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and was part of four straight goals by the Warriors, including three in the third period. She leads the team in game-winning tallies and is tied-for-fifth on the team in points with six.
Wayne State will begin conference play when it entertains Niagara at City Ice Arena on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17, at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
