Decatur, Ala. - The Wayne State University softball team (3-1 overall) concluded its season-opening weekend with a 5-1 triumph over Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the Charger Chillout being hosted by the University of Alabama Huntsville.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After the first two batters were retired, junior Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) singled and classmate Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) followed with a home run, her first of the season.

KWC scored in the bottom of the third with an unearned run on an error, a sacrifice bunt and a single.

WSU regained its two-run advantage in the top of the fourth as junior Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.). After an error and a strikeout, freshman Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont./Forest Heights C.I.) singled on a 3-2 pitch scoring Boxberger.

Wayne State tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth. Kish doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont./Guelph Collegiate V.I.). Pinch-hitter Katie Golub (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) was hit by a pitch and LeClair followed with a sacrifice fly plating Kish. Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) stole second and scored on a single by Berry.

Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) started in the circle for WSU and allowed an unearned run in 3.1 innings. Senior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) tossed the final 3.2 innings to earn her second victory of the weekend. She struck out three and did not walk a batter while allowing just one hit.

Sunday's action in Alabama was canceled due to unplayable field conditions.

Wayne State opens the Spring Rebel Games portion of its schedule against Nebraska-Omaha and Southern Indiana on March 10.
