DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (13-6 overall) opened the 2007 WSU Invitational with an 8-2 triumph over Findlay (2-15) Saturday morning at the WSU Softball Field.

The Warriors scored in each of the first four innings building up an 8-0 lead before the Oilers tallied twice in the bottom of the fourth. The home team was determined by a ball roll - each team selected one player to roll a ball from the batter's box towards the pitching rubber. The person coming the closest without going past the rubber earned the home team advantage for her squad.

In the top of the first, junior first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) started the game with a double to left and senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) followed with an infield single and Perry scored on a throwing error. Junior third baseman Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) worked a two-out walk on a full count pitch and junior outfielder Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) laced a double to left center on the second pitch scoring Haig.

In the next inning, freshman Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont./Forest Heights C.I.) had a leadoff double to left center and sophomore Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont./Guelph Collegiate V.I.) walked on four consecutive pitches. Junior Laura Guzman's (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) sacrifice bunt advanced both runners with a Perry groundout scoring LeClair for a 3-0 lead.

WSU kept the pressure on by adding two more runs in the top of the third as Haig walked on a full count pitch again, and scored on another double by Boxberger. Sophomore shortstop Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) singled moving Boxberger to third with Van't Wout's fielder's choice plating Boxberger.

Wayne State tacked on three more runs in the fourth as Perry had a leadoff double to left center on a 3-2 pitch. Sarah Berry's (Acton, Ont.) one out single scored Perry. With two outs, Boxberger smacked her first home run of the season on an 0-1 offering to complete the Warrior scoring.

Freshman hurler Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) went the distance for her third win of the season. She struck out five and walked four while allowing five hits.

Boxberger led the 11-hit Warrior attack with a WSU season-best four RBI and eight total bases. Wayne State had a team-high five doubles for 2007.

Seymour contributed three singles, while Perry had two hits and two runs scored.

In the other 10 am contest, Ferris State scored five times in the top of the third snapping a 1-1 draw and went on to defeat Hillsdale 8-3. Rhea Flores went four-for-four with three RBI including her first home run of the season for the Bulldogs. Jamie Meyers and Katie Botsis each had two hits for the Chargers.
