DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (15-7 overall) rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 triumph over Hillsdale College (7-8 overall) in a semifinal game of the 2007 WSU Invitational.
The visiting Chargers scored once in the top of the first and three times in the second for a 4-0 lead after an inning-and-a-half.
The Warriors started their comeback in the bottom of the second as junior Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) singled to center field and sophomore Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont./Forest Heights C.I.) with Boxberger scoring on a throwing error. Amanda Van't Wout's (Guelph, Ont./Guelph Collegiate V.I.) single plated Seymour.
Boxberger scored again in the fourth inning as she had a leadoff single to right field. Seymour then singled to left field moving Boxberger to second. LeClair had another sacrifice bunt with Boxberger scoring on Van't Wout's sacrifice fly to center field.
In the bottom of the sixth and trailing 4-3, WSU's leadoff batter junior Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) was hit by a pitch. Boxberger's sacrifice bunt moved Haig to second. Following a groundout, LeClair first collegiate home run put the Warriors ahead 5-4.
Senior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) started in the circle but walked four batters in 1.1 innings during the rain Sunday morning. Freshman Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) tossed five scoreless innings allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out two. Junior Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont./Glenview Park. S.S.) came in with a runner on first and one out in the top of the seventh and retired the next two batters, both on popouts, to notch the save.
WSU's five through eight batters recorded all six hits with Boxberger leading the way with two.
