DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team improved to 7-14 overall by recording a 4-3 triumph over Ferris State in the second round of the 2006 WSU Softball Invitational.

After having Saturday's second and third rounds postponed a day, the Warriors started strong against the Bulldogs scoring twice in the top of the first after losing the ball roll to decide the home team.

Sophomore Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) had a one-out double to left and scored on Sarah Berry's (Acton, Ont.) two-out home run to left on a 3-2 pitch.

WSU increased its lead to 3-0 with an unearned run the next inning. Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont.) reached on a throwing error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and scored when a pickoff throw at third went into left field and the FSU catcher was called for obstruction by blocking the plate without the ball.

The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second before the Warriors scored the eventual winning run in the top of the fifth.

Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) led off the top of the fifth with a single. Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) was safe on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont.) doubled down the left field line scoring Seymour with WSU's fourth run.

Ferris State scored once in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch after loading the bases with no outs. After a walk re-loaded the bases, the next three FSU batters hit into fielders' choices with the first two outs coming at home plate.

Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) earned the victory by allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned) in going the distance. FSU hurler Sarah Mueller allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) with three strikeouts and no walks.

Wayne State plays Findlay at noon in the final game of the round robin before the championship round begins at 3:30 p.m.
