DETROIT, Mich. - A seven-run sixth inning helped the Wayne State softball team (9-14) win its third straight game and the WSU Invitational by a score of 10-1 over Hillsdale (7-9).
Becky Quinn broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with an RBI double, bringing home Sue Verbeem, who singled to start the inning.
Wayne State added two runs in the fifth, which began with a double by Verbeem. She advanced to third on Quinn's sacrifice bunt, and scored when Robyn Haig doubled to left center. Sarah Berry and Lindsey Perry hit back-to-back singles, with Perry's scoring Haig.
Hilldale's Jamie Myers ended the shutout with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to narrow the Warriors' lead to 3-1.
The Warriors broke the game open in the sixth, however, scoring seven times. Quinn drove in a pair with a double, Perry knocked in a run with a single, and Jordan Sinclair hit an RBI double. Wayne State also scored three runs off two Hillsdale errors.
WSU starting pitcher Meghan Misiak (3-4) gave up just one run on three hits in six innings. She walked four and struck out eight.
Six different Warriors had at least two hits in the game. Verbeem went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Quinn had a team-high three RBI.
