Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University softball team (17-7 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) began conference play with a 1-0 triumph at Mercyhurst College (8-12 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) in the first game of a league doubleheader.
In a pitcher's duel between WSU junior Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont./Glenview Park. S.S.) and Laker Jen Feret each team managed just three hits.
Warrior sophomore Katie Golub (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) drilled the first pitch of the top of the fifth over the left field fence for the only run of the game. It was Golub's first career home run.
Each squad left six runners on base including two by Wayne State in the top of the first when it loaded the bases with no outs but was unable to score.
In four of the other six innings, WSU left one runner on base.
Mercyhurst had its leadoff batter on second with no outs in the bottom of the first but Yetman struck out the next two hitters and then recorded a ground out.
In five of the last six innings, the Lakers had one runner stranded.
Yetman had 15 strikeouts to one walk, and held MC to 0-for-10 with runners on base.
Feret struck out six and walked four while allowing singles to Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) and Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.).
After the second game of today's twinbill, the Warriors remain in Erie, Pa., to face Gannon in a GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday.
