Final Stats

Hillsdale, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (18-8 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) fell behind 5-0 in the second inning, eventually falling 7-5 at Hillsdale College (10-12 overall, 4-6 GLIAC) in the second game of Saturday's conference doubleheader.

The Chargers recorded five runs on three hits in the top of the second against Warrior starter Sam Cain. A single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out. An RBI double scored was followed by a ground out and an intentional walk to load the bases. Jordan Kellie then hit a grand slam making it 5-0.

Meanwhile, HC starter Jamie Vandenburgh retired the first 11 WSU batters until a two-out double in the fourth by Rebecca Stanley.

Wayne State pulled within a run with four in the bottom of the fifth. Stephanie LeClair and Becca Ryan had back-to-back doubles making it 5-1. After Lisa Seymour reached on an error, Jaci Banton's RBI single scored Ryan. Pinch-hitter Lauren Warkentien's sacrifice bunt advanced Banton and Seymour. Alison Allen's single plated Seymour, while Banton scored on an infield single by Stanley.

The Chargers scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh on two walks, a sacrifice bunt, an error, a fielder's choice and a single.

The Warriors tried to rally in the bottom of the frame. Banton had a leadoff double and scored when Allen's fly ball to right was dropped, but Allen was thrown out trying to go to third on the throw home. Amanda Van't Wout and Stanley singled but the next batter struck out.

Nicole Abel pitched well in relief limiting the Chargers to two unearned runs on one hit, while striking out seven in 4.1 innings. Casey Hanes came on in the seventh to get the final three outs. Cain allowed the first five HC runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.

WSU concludes its six-game road trip with a twinbill at Findlay on Sunday.
