DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's softball team (13-15 overall) held off a late Ferris State University (13-16) rally for a 5-4 non-league win Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Warriors had leads of 2-0 and 5-1 before the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the sixth, once in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded before relief pitcher Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) was able to get FSU's leadoff batter Sarah Mueller to groundout for the final out.

WSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) had a one-out infield single and Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) reached on an error. After a fielder's choice, Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) doubled to center field scoring Kish and Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.).

In the bottom of the third, Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) hit the first pitch of the frame over the left field fence for a 3-0 advantage.

Wayne State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Guzman walked on a 3-2 pitch and Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) singled through the left side. An FSU error loaded the bases with Guzman scoring on Robyn Haig's (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) RBI fielder's choice. The eventual game-winning run scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.).

Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) earned her sixth win of the season by allowing four runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings. She struck out two and walked three and surrendered a WSU season-high 12 hits. Warkentien notched her second save of the season as the WSU hurlers combined to strand 12 Bulldogs on base.
