DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (14-16 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) allowed five unearned runs in falling 9-4 to Gannon University (22-8, 3-0 GLIAC) in the opening game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The visiting Golden Knights scored four times in the top of the third on two-run singles by Steph Christ and Joanna Fergus. Jaclyn Corroto's RBI single made it 5-0 in the fourth and her two-run double in the sixth gave GU an 8-0 lead.
The Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) had a leadoff single and Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) followed with another single. After a wild pitch, Lindsey Perry's (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) groundout scored Quinn and Sarah Kish's (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) single up the middle plated Haig.
Gannon scored once in the top of the seventh, but in the bottom of the frame Amanda Dowe (Truro, Nova Scotia/Cobequid) reached on an error and scored on Sue Verbeem's (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich Secondary) home run to left field.
Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) started in the circle for WSU and allowed nine runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Gannon's pitcher Lauren Soldner allowed four runs (three earned) with five strikeouts and one walk.
Both teams had nine hits but WSU committed three errors to one for Gannon.
Notes:
Sarah Kish had her eighth multiple-hit game of the season.
Meghan Misiak allowed a season-high nine runs but only four were earned.
Becky Quinn had her first three-hit game of the year.
Wayne State had its three-game winning streak snapped.
