DETROIT - The Wayne State University Warrior softball team (16-16 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) took an early 8-0 lead and held on for an 8-4 triumph over the visiting Mercyhurst College Lakers (10-18 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) in the first game of a league doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors crossed the plate five times in the second inning with the aid of five hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Senior third baseman Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) had a leadoff double down the right field line and junior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) followed with a bunt single. Two outs later, senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) walked on four pitches and junior outfielder Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) was plunked on the next pitch with the bases loaded. Sophomore infielder Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) doubled to right center clearing the bases. Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) singled to center field scoring Haig with what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
The next inning, freshman second baseman Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) drew a one-out walk on a 3-2 offering. Following Laura Guzman's (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) bunt single, Verbeem drilled a three-run home run to left field.
Mercyhurst scored twice in the fourth on a bases loaded walk and a rundown that resulted in one out. The Lakers added two unearned runs the next inning on a bases loaded fielder's choice in which the runner starting from third was out at the plate.
Senior Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) earned her seventh win of the season by allowing four runs (two earned) with two walks. She tied a personal (and team) season-high with eight strikeouts. Kim Griffin started for Mercyhurst and was tagged for five earned runs in 1.2 innings. Brittany Strier tossed the final 4.1 innings allowing just two hits but three earned runs.
Mercyhurst outhit the Warriors 8-7 but WSU had the only three extra-base hits. Seven different Wayne State batters had hits in the contest.
