DETROIT - The Wayne State University Warrior softball team (17-16 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) completed its doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst College (10-19 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) with a 4-2 victory in game two Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run fourth inning. After the first two batters were retired, Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) reached on a throwing error by the Laker third baseman. Anna Schneider (Detroit, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) then doubled to right field scoring Kish on her first extra-base hit of the season. Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich) reached on a Mercyhurst fielding error and Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Becky Quinn's (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) two-run single to left gave WSU a 3-0 advantage.
The Lakers pulled within a run by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back one-out singles plus a WSU error put runners on second and third and Jennifer Popinski delivered a two-run single to left. WSU pitcher Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) retired the next two batters on groundout to keep the Warriors ahead by a run.
In the top of the seventh, Quinn walked on four pitches, moved to second on a pitch in the dirt and advanced to third as the catcher's throw to second went into center field. Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) singled through the left side scoring Quinn.
Ytsma allowed a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but then retired the next three batters for her fourth consecutive victory.
Ytsma improved to 6-4 by limiting Mercyhurst to two earned runs in seven innings on seven hits and one walk. She struck out two. Jen Feret went the distance for the Lakers allowing four runs (one earned) in seven innings with five strikeouts, six walks and two hit batsmen.
Mercyhurst outhit the Warriors 7-5 but three Laker errors led to three unearned runs.
