DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (18-16 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) began its six-games in three day homestand with a 10-2 triumph over visiting Lake Superior (10-17 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) Thursday afternoon in the first game of a conference twinbill at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman second baseman Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) singled down the left field line and sophomore Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) followed with an infield single. After Sue Verbeem's (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, junior outfielder Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) belted a three-run home run over the left field fence.
WSU increased its lead to 7-0 with a four run fourth inning. Senior third baseman Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) smacked a one-out double to left field and junior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) followed with an infield single. Guzman's infield single with two outs loaded the bases and Verbeem's single up the middle plated Sinclair and Kish with Guzman scoring on a Laker throwing error. Quinn's single scored Verbeem with Wayne State's final run of the frame.
After Lake Superior scored twice in the top of the fifth on back-to-back walks, an RBI double and an RBI groundout, the Warriors ended the game with a three-run inning.
Sophomore infielder Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) reached on an error and Sinclair was safe on a fielder's choice. Kish's single scored Perry, while Sinclair scored on a Seymour single. Kish's run on a wild pitch ended the game.
Senior Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) improved her record to 8-6 by striking out five and walking two in five innings. Misiak's 56th career win places her in a tie-for-third on WSU's all-time list. The two hits allowed were a season-best for Misiak as 44 of her 65 pitches went for strikes.
Cherish Samuels started for LSSU and allowed seven runs (all earned) in 3.2 innings on 10 hits. Stephanie Reveley pitched a 1/3 of an inning and allowed three unearned runs.
Four different Warriors (Quinn, Kish, Seymour and Guzman) had two hits apiece as every starter but one recorded a hit. Guzman equaled her season-high with two hits, while Sinclair set a season-best with two runs scored. Quinn tied a season-high with four RBI.
