DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (19-16 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) moved into a virtual tie with Northwood University (24-9 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) with a 9-0 whitewash of Lake Superior (10-18 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) Thursday afternoon in the second game of a league doubleheader at the WSU Softball Stadium.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) doubled to right center on the game's second pitch. Sophomore infielder Robyn Haig's (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) one-out single to left center scored Verbeem.

Wayne State added three runs in the top of the second. Senior outfielder Amanda Dowe (Truro, Nova Scotia/Cobequid) singled up the middle on a 3-2 offering. With two outs, Verbeem singled to centerfield and junior outfielder Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) followed with a three-run home run over the left field fence, her second three-run home run of the day.

WSU scored five times in the top of the third for a 9-0 advantage. Sophomore infielder Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) doubled down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch and senior third baseman Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) reached on a bunt single with Perry scoring on a Laker throwing error. Sophomore outfielder Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) had an RBI single to center field and scored on a Verbeem double to left center. Quinn was hit by a pitch and after a passed ball, Haig doubled down the left field line plating Verbeem and Quinn.

Warrior junior hurler Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) faced just 17 batters during the five inning contest to record her 10th career shutout. She also recorded her 200th career strikeout in the third inning. Ytsma notched her fifth consecutive victory as 42 of her 59 pitches were for strikes. She had five strikeouts and zero walks.

Wayne State continues its homestand with a GLIAC doubleheader on Friday against Northwood. WSU is ranked 10th this week in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings, while the Timberwolves were ranked fifth. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the WSU Softball Stadium.

WSU Notes:

Wayne State has won five straight for the second time in the last month. The Warriors are 13-2 in their last 15 contests.

WSU had a season-best five doubles.

Becky Quinn moved into a tie-for-eighth all-time with 10 home runs. She has four home runs in the last five games.

In her last six games, Quinn is 10-for-16 (.625), with four home runs, eight runs scored and 14 RBI.

Robyn Haig tied a season-high with three RBI. She has three doubles in her last five games. Both Haig and Sue Verbeem led the Warriors with three hits in the contest.

In addition to equaling her season-high with three hits, Verbeem tied WSU season-bestswith three runs scored and two doubles.
