University Center, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball squad (22-11 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) was unable to complete a road sweep at Saginaw Valley (19-10,7-3 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals recorded a 3-1 win in game two.
SVSU scored once in the top of the first on three consecutive singles after the first batter was retired.
In the fourth, SVSU added to its lead by scoring twice on a double, a single, a walk and a WSU error.
Wayne State scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth as Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) had a leadoff single. With two outs, Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont./Guelph Collegiate V.I.) doubled in Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley), who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Senior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) started for the Warriors and allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings. Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, while Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) retired two of the three batters she faced.
Wayne State is 5-3 in the GLIAC despite playing all eight games on the road. The Warriors continue their road GLIAC stretch with a twinbill at Hillsdale on Wednesday.
After the Charger series, the Warriors will play six consecutive home games starting with the make-up doubleheader against Grand Valley on Thursday.
