DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (23-17 overall, 12-3 GLIAC) had its nine-game winning streak end as Hillsdale College (18-15 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) scored four times in the top of the seventh for a 6-5 win at the WSU Softball Stadium in the first game of a league doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
WSU starter Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) walked the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh and after the next batter hit into a fielder's choice, Brecken Libbe had an infield single to put two runners on base. An RBI single by Britt Sevey cut the Warrior lead to 4-3, and freshman Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) relieved Misiak at that point. Warkentien hit the first batter on the foot to load the bases, but induced Ashley Wolff to pop out to the mound. Katie Botsis hit a three-run double to right center on a 1-2 pitch as the Chargers were down to their final strike. The next two batters walked on a total of nine pitches, before Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) relieved Warkentien.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) singled and Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) followed with her third double of the contest, a WSU season-high. Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) had an RBI single to left field pull the Warriors within a run at 6-5. The next three Wayne State batters struck out to end the game with the tying run at third base.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a double by Perry and and a two-out RBI single off the bat of Amanda Dowe (Truro, Nova Scotia/Cobequid).
Hillsdale scored twice in the top of the fifth for a 2-1 lead. WSU had three errors in the frame resulting in both runs being unearned.
Wayne State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs. Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) had a one-out single and Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) walked on a 3-2 pitch. Berry followed with an RBI single and Perry doubled in the other run. The Warriors had runners at second and third with one out but could not add any insurance runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, WSU increased its lead to 4-2 was Dowe reached on a strikeout with a passed ball. A groundout moved Dowe to second and she scored on a two-out Verbeem double to left field.
Misiak pitched the first 6.1 innings for WSU and allowed five runs (three earned) with six strikeouts and five walks. Warkentien retired one batter and was charged with one run and two walks. Ytsma retired the lone batter she faced.
Hillsdale's Aimee Genter earned the win despite allowing 12 hits and five runs (three earned). She struck out nine and walked one.
