Hillsdale, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (23-11 overall, 6-3 GLIAC) recorded a 9-6 triumph at Hillsdale College (12-17 overall, 3-8 GLIAC) in the first game of a conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
WSU scored once in the top of the first, added four more runs the next inning and then held off a late Charger rally.
In the top of the first Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) had a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.). A single by Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) moved Perry to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.).
The next inning started similarly with a leadoff walk to Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.). Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled to right center. After Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) reached on an error, Perry smacked a grand slam to right for her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
HC tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the third, but WSU scored twice in the top of the fourth after the first two batters were retired. Teller walked and Perry followed with a double. Kish reached on an error that allowed both runners to score making it 7-1 Warriors.
The Chargers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back doubles and a single. In the bottom of the sixth, HC's Jamie Meyers hit a three-run home run to pull the hosts within a run at 7-6 but the next two hitters made outs.
Wayne State added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with two outs. LeClair had a bunt single and Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) followed with a single. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Teller doubled to center scoring both LeClair and Van't Wout.
Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) started in the circle for WSU and went two scoreless innings before Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) tossed the next three innings allowing three runs (two earned) to earn her first win of the season. Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont.) pitched the final two innings allowing three earned runs on a hit and two walks.
