Highland Hts., Ky. - The Wayne State University Warrior softball team (25-18 overall) was one out away from a sweep at Northern Kentucky (29-15) but the host Norse scored three times in the seventh for a 4-3 win.
WSU snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fourth. Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.). After a fly out, Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) singled to left and when the outfielder bobbled the ball Sinclair was able to score the game's first run.
NKU tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Amanda Smith in the bottom of the fifth.
The Warriors had a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth as Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) had a leadoff double and Sinclair followed with a bunt single advancing Verbeem to third. The next three WSU hitters were unable to plate Verbeem.
Wayne State did snap the 1-1 draw with a two-run seventh inning. Senior outfielder Amanda Dowe (Truro, Nova Scotia/Cobequid) had a leadoff double and was sacrificed to third by Anna Schneider (Detroit, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy). Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) singled and Laura Guzman's (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) single scored Dowe. Verbeem's first sacrifice fly of the season plated Seymour.
In the bottom of the seventh, WSU senior Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) walked the first batter after striking out the three batters she faced in the sixth. Ricki Rothbauer and Heather Cotner had back-to-back singles to pull the Norse within a run at 3-2. Following a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Misiak struck out Katybeth Coode. Cara Parker's single scored two runs.
Freshman Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) started for Wayne State and pitched the first two innings allowing two hits and no runs with one strikeout and two walks. Sinclair hurled the next three innings allowing just one run on five hits with a strikeout. Misiak was charged with three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 1.2 innings.
