DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team improved to 24-12 overall (7-4 GLIAC) with a 4-0 victory over visiting Grand Valley (23-9 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) Thursday afternoon in the first game of a conference doubleheader. It was also WSU's first home GLIAC game of the season after playing its first 10 league games on the road.
Warrior junior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) recorded her GLIAC-leading ninth shutout of the season outdueling Laker hurler Lori Andjelich. They entered this afternoon's contest 1-2 in the GLIAC in ERA (Yetman at 0.49; Andjelich at 0.89) and both had 11-2 marks.
After GVSU left the bases loaded in the top of the first, WSU senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) drilled Andjelich's fourth pitch in the bottom of the frame over the center field fence for her seventh career home run.
The Lakers left two runners on base in both the second and third innings, with Wayne State concluding the game one scoring in the bottom of the third. Junior Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) had a leadoff single, and with one out Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) singled to center field. After a fielder's choice erased Haig, freshman Stephanie LeClair homered to left field on a 2-2 pitch for her second home run of the campaign.
Yetman then retired 10 of the next 11 Laker batters until Sarah Holland had a one-out single in the seventh. Yetman then sandwiched a walk around two fly outs for the victory.
In the top of the fifth, WSU outfielder Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) made a diving catch in right center to end the inning. She also reached base twice on a double and a walk. The two-bagger was Van't Wout's third in the last four games.
Yetman scattered four hits, three walks and two hit batters as GVSU stranded 10 runners.
Wayne State's 12-hit attack included safeties by seven different players. Haig went three-for-four, while the top three in the order -- Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy), Kish and Berry -- each had two hits. Berry also walked twice as she reached base all four times.
The Warriors were six-for-21 with runners on base, while the Lakers were one-for-10. WSU also went five-for-11 with two outs, to GVSU's one-for-eight.
