DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (24-13 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) fell 7-3 to visiting Grand Valley State (24-9 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) in the second game of a conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first (home team is reversed for the second game of GLIAC doubleheaders) as Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) walked and later stole second with two outs. Meredith Boxberger's (Canton, Mich.) single to right center scored Perry.
The Lakers took the lead for good with five runs (two earned) in the bottom of the second on four hits, two WSU errors. Lisa Preuss had a three-run home run.
GVSU added a run in the third on an RBI single by Sarah Holland.
WSU had the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth but were unable to score. In the next inning, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) homered to left center on a 3-2 pitch. After the first two Warrior hitters were retired in the sixth, Perry, Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Berry had three consecutive singles to load the bases. Boxberger's laser up the middle hit off GVSU pitcher Stephanie Cole to second baseman Kristin Moleski, who's throw to first just beat Boxberger in a bang-bang play to end the frame.
In the seventh, WSU had two runners on with two outs but couldn't get a key hit. The Warriors were five-for-19 with runners on base compared to the Lakers six-for-15. Wayne State left 12 runners on base to GVSU's eight.
WSU continues its homestand with non-league doubleheaders on Saturday (vs. Quincy) and Sunday (vs. Missouri-St. Louis) before concluding the road portion of its GLIAC schedule with a twinbill at Lake Superior on Monday.
