DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad improved to 25-13 overall with a 5-0 whitewash of Quincy University (22-17) in the first game of a non-league doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
WSU junior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) tied the school record for shutouts in a season (10) by allowing the Lady Hawks just one hit (a one-out single in the top of the first) and no runs. Meghan Misiak had 10 shutouts in 2003, the previous record since shutouts by an individual pitcher started being recorded in 1994.
Yetman retired the final seven QU hitters after allowing a walk and a hit batsman in the fifth. An inning in which she also struck out the side.
The Warriors snapped the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) reached on a Quincy error. Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) following with a single that landed just fair down the right field line. After back-to-back pop ups, junior Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) doubled to left field scoring both runners. Berry then scored on a single to left by Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.).
Wayne State completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) walked to lead off the frame, and after a one-out sacrifice bunt continued on to third base on a Lady Hawks throwing error. Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) had a pinch-hit infield single scoring Seymour, and Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) followed with a single through the left side.
WSU had nine hits with only senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) having a multi-hit affair.
Yetman finished with 12 strikeouts and only two walks to improve to 13-2 on the season. It was her eighth game with a double-digit strikeout total and her third one-hitter of the season. She also has two no-hitters. The Warriors are 14-2 when Yetman starts, with both losses coming when WSU was shutout (8-0 at Florida Southern, and 3-0 at Northwood).
