DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (26-13) completed its non-conference twinbill sweep of Quincy University (22-18) with a 6-1 triumph in game two on Saturday.

After the Lady Hawks had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out home run by Missy Weaver, WSU starter Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) and Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) combined to blank QU the rest of the way.

The Warriors took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the second. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single through the left side. Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) followed with a single down the right field line on a 3-2 pitch. Lauren Warkentien's (East China, Mich./Marine City) single up the middle on a 1-2 offering scored Van't Wout. Lindsey Perry's (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position with Teller scoring on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.). On the very next pitch, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) drilled a two-run home run to left.

Wayne State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth as Perry doubled to left center leading off the inning, her team-leading 13th two-bagger of the season. LeClair's bunt single passed the third baseman also went past the shortstop area as she went to cover third allowing Perry to score all the way from second. LeClair advanced to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on single by Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) that hit the top of the left field home run fence and bounced back into play. LeClair then scored on a wild pitch.

Abel worked into the sixth inning, and allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks to earn her seventh win of the campaign. Yetman entered the contest with no outs and two runners on and retired the next three batters, then allowed back-to-back one-out singles in the seventh before retiring two of the next three batters to preserve the win.

With Yetman's three strikeouts she moved into second place on the WSU all-time single-season list with 168 strikeouts. She moved ahead of Amy Thiede's (2001) and Meghan Misiak's (2003) total of 167. The school record is 205 set by Thiede in 2000. Yetman's ERA of 0.41 is the second-best by a WSU pitcher with at least 100 innings pitched in a season (0.36 - Kelly Hawker in 1988 had 8 ER in 154.0 IP).

Wayne State hosts GLVC member Missouri-St. Louis for a non-league doubleheader on Sunday, April 22. First pitch at the WSU Softball Stadium is noon.
