DETROIT - The Wayne State University Warrior softball team (26-18 overall) blanked the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (29-16) 2-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium in a battle of regionally ranked opponents.

The Greyhounds were ranked third in the Great Lakes Region as of last Sunday with the Warriors ranked sixth.

WSU senior pitcher Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) tossed her team-leading third shutout of the season, and the 18th of her career by limiting UI to three hits over seven innings. Misiak also passed the 400 career strikeout mark by recording seven strikeouts in the game. Her career mark is 406.

Misiak (12-8) retired the first six UI batters before allowing a walk leading off the third, her first of three in the contest. In the fourth, the Greyhounds had back-to-back singles but the first batter, Madison Dickman, was erased as she rounded first base too far.

In the fifth, UI had two base runners with only one out, but Misiak retired the next two hitters. Indianapolis was 0-for-6 in the game with runners on base.

Meanwhile, Wayne State batters were held at bay until the fourth inning when Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) singled and Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) walked but a fielder's choice ended the frame.

The Warriors were able to score twice in the bottom of the sixth for the win. Senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) walked on a 3-2 pitch leading off the inning. Sinclair's sacrifice bunt moved Verbeem to second and following a groundout, sophomore infielder Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) doubled to left field scoring Verbeem. Kish then laced her first career triple down the right field line scoring Perry.

UI pitcher Beth Wendlinger (21-7) struck out five and walked two while allowing three hits.

Notes:

Meghan Misiak set a WSU record with her 114th game pitched. She also recorded her 60th career victory.

The Warriors are 12-2 in their last 14 contests.

WSU's four seniors (Amanda Dowe, Meghan Misiak, Jordan Sinclair and Sue Verbeem) were recognized in between games for their contributions to the Warrior softball program.
