DETROIT - The Wayne State University Warrior softball team (26-19 overall) suffered a 5-0 loss to the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (30-16) in game two of a non-league twinbill Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium in a battle of regionally ranked opponents.

The Greyhounds were ranked third in the Great Lakes Region as of last Sunday with the Warriors ranked sixth.

WSU senior pitcher Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) allowed five runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings to suffer the loss. Both unearned runs came on a throwing error by Sinclair in the top of the second to snap a scoreless tie.

Freshman Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) pitched the final 2.1 innings blanking the Greyhounds on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Warkentien entered the game after Sinclair had allowed three consecutive two-out doubles giving UI a 5-0 advantage.

Wayne State had eight singles, but was held without an extra-base hit for the first time in seven games. The Warriors stranded nine runners after going 3-for-13 with runners on base. Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) had two of the three hits with runners on.

In the first four innings, the Warriors had just one runner reach second base against UI pitcher Amanda Wendlinger. In the fifth, Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) and Boxberger had back-to-back two-out singles but the next hitter was retired.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Katie Facecchia (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) singled but was erased on a double play. Warkentien, Verbeem and Boxberger all singled to load the bases but a groundout ended the contest.

Verbeem, Boxberger and Sinclair each had two hits to pace the Warrior offensive attack.

Wayne State concludes its home schedule with a 16-4 mark including a 10-2 ledger for GLIAC games.

The Warriors begin a stretch of eight consecutive road contests starting Tuesday at Oakland University. First pitch in Rochester is slated for 3 p.m.

Notes:

Sue Verbeem is tied-for-first on the squad with 15 multiple-hit games.

Jordan Sinclair went 2-for-3 in the second game versus Indianapolis to finish the week at .500 (10-20).
