DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team improved its non-conference record to 20-8 and its overall mark to 27-13 with an 8-0 five inning triumph over Missouri-St. Louis (20-25) in the first game of Sunday's twinbill at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Riverwomen's lone hit of the contest came as leadoff batter Alex Pepin blooped a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a double. WSU pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) retired the next nine UMSL batters and 15 of 17 (one walk and one error) for her 11th shutout of the season (the most by a WSU hurler since individual shutouts started being kept in 1994). It was also her fourth one-hitter of the campaign (along with two no-hitters).
The Warriors wasted no time jumping on UMSL starter Dana Essner. Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a one-out single to left and moved to second on a single by Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.). Kish scored on Meredith Boxberger's (Canton, Mich.) single up the middle with both Berry and Boxberger moving up a base on the throw home. A walk to Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) loaded the bases before Lisa Seymour's (Davison, Mich.) sacrifice fly scored Berry. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) followed with a two-run single to center.
WSU added a single run in the second as Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) had a one-out single and continued on to second base on a fielding error. Kish's single up the middle scored Perry.
Wayne State's final two runs came in the fourth off relief pitcher Alex Ogle. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) drew a one-out walk and Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) followed with a single Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Perry then doubled to left field on a 3-2 pitch scoring Van't Wout. Kish's groundout plated Warkentien.
The top three in the WSU lineup -- Perry, Kish and Berry -- combined to go six-for-nine with four runs scored and four RBI.
Yetman struck out seven and walked one in improving her record to 14-2. She entered the week second nationally in earned run average (0.50) and strikeouts per seven innings (11.8). In five appearances this week, Yetman had a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA (0 runs in 23.0 innings) with 33 strikeouts as opponents batted .141 (11 for 78).
