DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (34-13 overall, 13-5 GLIAC) increased its winning streak to 10 games with an 8-0 triumph in six innings over visiting Findlay (8-39 overall, 2-16 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium in game two of a league doubleheader.
Warrior senior pitcher Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont.) tossed a one-hit shutout on Senior Day, in which Ytsma and classmate Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) were honored for their four years in the Wayne State softball program.
WSU scored once in the top of the first as Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) singled up the middle on the first pitch of the game and advanced to second on a ground out by Kish. Perry then scored from second when Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) reached on an infield single and throw to home by the Oiler first baseman was off the mark.
With one out in the third, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) drilled a home run to left giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
Wayne State put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) led off the frame with a homer to left. With one out, Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) reached on a fielding error by the UF shortstop. Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) followed with a single through the left side. Teller then advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a single by Kish. Berry's single to right center scored Guzman with Kish crossing the plate as Haig reached on a throwing error. Katie Golub (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) added a two-run pinch-hit single to center scoring Haig and Berry.
The Warriors have moved into second place in the GLIAC with a 13-5 conference mark, one game behind Ferris State (14-4) who visits the WSU Softball Stadium for a twinbill on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Grand Valley lost twice on Saturday at Mercyhurst to fall to 12-6. Both Gannon and Mercyhurst are 11-7.
Wayne State closes out the regular season with a home doubleheader against Detroit Mercy on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is slated for 3:05 p.m. as both contests will be televised by Comcast Local throughout the state of Michigan.
