Big Rapids, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball squad (28-21 overall, 14-4 GLIAC) suffered a 14-4 setback in six innings at Ferris State (25-23 overall, 9-9 GLIAC) Friday afternoon in the second game of a conference twinbill.
The teams combined for 10 errors and 12 unearned runs in the contest.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a hit by pitch, a sac bunt and an RBI single.
WSU rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) and freshman second baseman Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) both reached on errors with Kish scoring the tying run on a throwing error by FSU. Sophomore outfielder Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) singled to right plating Seymour.
Ferris State tied the game with an unearned run in the top of third and broke the game open with a six run fourth inning. FSU had four hits in the frame and left three runners on base as WSU committed two errors and walked three batters.
After FSU went ahead 10-2 in the top of the fifth, the Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the inning to extend the game. Sophomore Katie Facecchia (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) had a one-out pinch-hit walk. Senior Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) reached on an error moving pinch-runner Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) to second. A ground out advanced both runners with Guzman scoring on an RBI single by sophomore Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.). Sophomore Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) drove in Verbeem with a single to left center.
FSU scored four times on four hits in the top of the sixth to conclude the scoring.
The Bulldogs outhit the Warriors 11-5 with five different WSU batters recording one hit each.
Amanda Jager went the distance for FSU striking out eight and walking three. Junior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.) started in the circle for WSU and allowed seven runs (only two earned) in 3.1 innings. Freshman Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) hurled the final 2.2 innings allowing seven runs (four earned).
Wayne State controls its own destiny in terms of the GLIAC regular-season title which is based on conference wins. The Warriors enter the final day (except make-ups) with 14 league victories. Northwood has 13 wins and leads both Gannon and Ashland (who each have 12 wins) . Each of the top four teams are scheduled to conclude league play on Saturday.
Grand Valley (9-7), WSU's opponent on Saturday, is currently fifth but after Saturday's doubleheader with the Warriors still has two games remaining on Monday at Lake Superior.
Notes:
WSU equaled a season-high with six errors.
Sue Verbeem extended her hitting streak to five games and has a hit in 12 of her last 13 contests.
Robyn Haig and Lisa Seymour each extended their hitting streaks to four games, a career-best for Seymour.
Two Warriors, Becky Quinn and Sarah Berry, have missed the last eight and six games, respectively, due to injuries.
