Allendale, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball squad (29-21 overall, 15-4 GLIAC) clinched a share of the GLIAC regular-season title with a 2-0 triumph at Grand Valley (25-18, 9-8 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon in game one of a conference twinbill.
The Warriors have 15 league wins and Northwood could match that total with a sweep today of Lake Superior.
WSU senior pitcher Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) recorded her fourth shutout in the last 11 days by limiting the Lakers to six hits. GVSU had just one runner reach third base in the first six innings and that came with two outs. However in the bottom of the seventh, Grand Valley loaded the bases with one out but Misiak was able to retire the next two batters on a pop out and a fly out. She equaled a WSU season-high with eight strikeouts.
The Warriors would score the only runs of the game in the top of the third as senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) singled to left field with one out. After a pop out, sophomore infielder Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) drilled a two-run home run to left center.
Sophomore Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) led the Warriors with a three-for-three with a double performance, while Verbeem added two hits to WSU's eight-hit attack.
Notes:
Wayne State went three-for-11 with runners on base, while Grand Valley was two-for-12..
Both teams left seven runners on base.
Meghan Misiak did not issue a walk for the first game this season, in addition to striking out a team season-tying best eight hitters.
Lindsey Perry had her third three-hit game of the season.
