DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (36-13 overall, 15-5 GLIAC) won the 2007 GLIAC regular-season title with a 7-0 victory over Ferris State University (28-13 overall, 14-6 GLIAC) in the second game of Sunday's GLIAC twinbill at the WSU Softball Stadium.
Warrior freshman Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) tossed her first collegiate shutout, a one-hitter, against the Bulldogs. She struck out six and walked one as the Warriors scored single runs in each of the first three innings.
In the bottom of the first, junior first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the frame. Senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) then laid down her GLIAC-leading 14th sacrifice bunt. Perry advanced to third on a single through the left side by junior Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) on a 1-2 offering. Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) followed with another single on a 1-2 pitch scoring Perry.
The hit for Berry came after having her 16-game hit streak halted in the opener.
In the second, Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) had a leadoff single then stole second. She advanced to third on an errant throw by the FSU catcher and scored on a sacrifice fly by Perry.
WSU increased its lead to 3-0 in the third as Boxberger reached on a one-out fielding error and moved to second on a groundout. Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) then singled up the middle on the next pitch scoring Boxberger.
The Warriors added two more runs in the fifth as Berry had an infield single and moved to second on a Boxberger sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Seymour singled through the left side scoring Berry with Seymour going all the way to third as throw home got away. Seymour then scored as LeClair reached on a throwing error.
Wayne State's final two runs came in the top of the sixth as Perry reached with one out on an FSU error, then stole second. She advanced to third on a Kish groundout which ended her 13-game hitting streak. On the very next pitch, Berry drilled a two-run home run to left.
Abel's no-hitter was broken up with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by McKenzie West through the left side.
Wayne State concludes the regular-season with a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Detroit Mercy. First pitch is at 3 p.m. and both games will be televised live throughout the state of Michigan on Comcast Local.
