Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (37-13) rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a five-run sixth inning to down Saginaw Valley (23-19) 6-2 in the opening game for both teams in the 2007 GLIAC tournament being held at Emerson Park in Midland.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Merdith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) had a leadoff single on an 0-2 pitch. A fielder's choice and a groundout moved Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) to second. Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) followed with an RBI single up the middle.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to left by Vanessa Briggs.

The winning rally in the bottom of the sixth started with Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont) having a leadoff single to left. Both pinch-runner Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) and Boxberger were safe on a throwing error. Haig's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners with Guzman scoring to tie the game at two on a single to right by Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.). LeClair's single to center plated Boxberger with the eventual game-winning run. Amanda Van't Wout's (Guelph, Ont.) infield single loaded the bases. LeClair then scored from second on a fielder's choice and an error. Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) then laced an 0-2 offering into left center scoring both Van't Wout and pinch-runner Sarah Teller (Chesterfield, Mich.).

Warrior junior Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) went the distance to earn her 21st win of the campaign. She struck out 12 and walked one while allowing three hits.

Wayne State will play Grand Valley in a winner's bracket game at 4 p.m.
