Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (37-14 overall) suffered a 5-1 setback to Grand Valley (31-14) in a GLIAC tournament winner's bracket semifinal contest Friday afternoon at Emerson Park in Midland.
WSU junior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) pulled a Houdini in the second inning as the Lakers loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two infield singles, before Yetman recorded back-to-back strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second, both Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) and Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) reached on errors, but the Warriors were unable to score on a pop out, a fielder's choice and a foul out.
GVSU scored twice in the top of the fourth on two hits and a WSU error. A leadoff walk to Crista Buresh followed by back-to-back singles loaded the bases. WSU almost escaped again as Yetman struck out the next two batters but a hit by pitch scored one, and an error allowed the second run to score.
The Warriors cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out home run by Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.). Singles by Haig and Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) sandwiched around an out gave WSU two runners on base, but the next batter was retired.
The Lakers added three runs in the top of the seventh on a home run by Elizabeth Smith.
WSU had a leadoff pinch-hit double by Katie Golub (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) in the bottom of the seventh, but the next three hitters were out.
Yetman allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings with seven strikeouts. Senior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont.) tossed the final two innings.
Wayne State will play Mercyhurst in an elimination game at 10 am on Saturday. A win would put the Warriors in a noon contest against the 10 am winner of Ferris State and Saginaw Valley.
