Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball squad (30-22) opened the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament with an 8-0 triumph in five innings over Saginaw Valley (22-31) Friday morning at Emerson Park in Midland.
The Warriors started strong in the bottom of the first as senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) doubled to left center on the first pitch she saw. The two-bagger gave Verbeem the WSU all-time mark for career doubles at 58.
After back-to-back outs, sophomore Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) singled to center scoring Verbeem. Sophomore Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) then homered to left field on the next pitch for a 3-0 WSU advantage.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) walked with two outs, and Haig followed with a two-run blast to left.
Junior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) led off the fourth with a single to center. Freshman second baseman Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) walked advancing pinch-runner Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) to second. Sophomore Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) had a bunt single but the throw was wild allowing Teller and Seymour to score.
Haig had a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and moved to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on Jordan Sinclair's (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent S.S.) ground out and scored the game-ending run on a single by Sarah Kish.
Senior pitcher Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) tossed her fifth consecutive shutout against a Division II opponent limiting the Cardinals to two hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
The Warriors went five-for-13 with runners on base, while the Cardinals were zero-for-four.
Wayne State will face Ashland in a winner's bracket semifinal game at 3 p.m.
