Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (31-22) advanced to the winner's bracket championship game of the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament with 4-3 victory over Ashland University (34-20) Friday afternoon at Emerson Park in Midland.

The Warriors fell behind 2-0 in the second inning on a two-run home run by the Eagles' Kristen McGaughey.

WSU tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third. Junior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) led off the frame with a single, and after back-to-back strikeouts, senior shortstop Sue Verbeem (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich S.S.) singled. Junior Becky Quinn (Ortonville, Mich./Oakland Christian) singled to load the bases and sophomore Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) followed with a two-run single.

Wayne State went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Quinn was hit by a pitch with two outs and Berry then smacked a two-run home run to left field.

Ashland scored once in the top of the seventh to pull within a run at 4-3 and had a runners at second and third with one out but WSU hurler Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) retired the next two batters on a ground out and a pop out.

Misiak earned her second win of the day by scattering eight hits and limiting AU to three runs (two earned). She struck out seven and walked one. The Eagles were four-for-19 with runners on base.

Wayne State will face Gannon in the winner's bracket championship game at 7 p.m.
