Edwardsville, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team (32-25) suffered a 7-0 setback to Southern Indiana (38-16) in the first game of the 2006 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional tournament being held at Edwardsville, Ill.
The Warriors fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first as the Screaming Eagles leadoff batter walked on a 3-2 pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Kristin Eickholt doubled down the right field line scoring Lacey Ligmanowski.
In the bottom of the fourth, after two of the first three batters were retired, USI had five consecutive singles to score three runs. A WSU error allowed another run and Audra Lindenschmidt followed with a two-run single to center field.
The Warriors had just two hits, a two out single in the top of the fourth by Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) and a two-out single in the top of the fifth by Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.). Jordan Sinclair (Chatham, Ont.) walked with two outs in the seventh.
WSU senior starter Meghan Misiak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) pitched the first four innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits. She struck out four and walked two. Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont.) tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit with a strikeout.
USI hurler Missy Grover struck out four and walked one while facing 25 batters in seven innings.
Lindenschmidt, Ally McKinley and Jennifer Mullikin each had two hits for the Screaming Eagles.
Wayne State left four runners on base while USI left seven on base.
The Warriors will play Gannon in an elimination game slated for 9:30 a.m. (CT) should the remaining two games on Thursday be played in their entirety.
