DETROIT, Mich. - It came down to the final relay, but Wayne State's women's swimming and diving team was able to hold off Calvin College, 154-146, on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
After finishing second in the 400 medley relay (Erin Hill, Amber Staudacher, Katie Harrigan, Christy Koehler) to open the meet, WSU's Melissa Duff, Tiffanie Laforet, and Whitney Baker swept the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle.
Mandy Burton, Koehler, and Duff took second through fourth in the 200 free, Katie Harrigan won the 100 backstroke, and Staudacher took first in the 100 breaststroke. Stephanie Cummings and Amanda Marshall went one-two in the 200 fly, and Erika Barczyk won the three-meter diving competition.
Calvin battled back, however, taking the next six individual events and forcing the meet to come down to the 400 freestyle relay. The Warrior quartet of Brooke White, Burton, Julie Danaher, and Koehler edged the Calvin relay by .19 to claim the victory for Wayne State.
WSU will face GLIAC competition in its final two dual meets, traveling to Ashland on Friday, Jan. 20, before coming home for Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 28, against Gannon.
