DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's swimming team closed out the regular-season portion of its 2005-06 schedule with a 130-95 win over visiting Gannon University Saturday at the Matthaei Aquatic Center on the WSU campus.
The Warriors started out strong winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:10.94. The quartet consisted of junior Erin Hill (Holt, Mich.), sophomore Amber Staudacher (Rockford, Mich.), sophomore Katie Harrigan (Portage, Mich./Northern) and freshman Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage).
In addition to winning the final relay (400 free), WSU won nine of the 11 individual events.
Freshman Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich./Brighton) was victorious in the 1000 free (10:58.42) as WSU took the top three places. Junior Mandy Burton (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) was second (11:05.91) and sophomore Tiffanie Laforet (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Annes) was third (11:21.17).
Junior Christy Koehler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) had the best times in both the 200 free (2:01.15) and 500 free (5:25.32). Burton took second in the 200 free (2:01.37), while Laforet was second in the 500 free (5:35.41) and Rakouth was third in the 500 free (5:42.54).
Harrigan claimed two first-place finishes -- the 200 IM (2:16.09) and the 100 back (1:02.65). Sophomore Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.) placed second in the 200 IM (2:23.73).
Divers Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) and Lindsey O'Neill (Dearborn Hts., Mich./Crestwood)each won an event, Barczak in three-meter (242.93) and O'Neill in the one-meter competition (238.43).
It was fitting on "Senior Day" that seniors Amanda Marshall (Berkley, Mich.) and Stephanie Cummings (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) tied-for-first in the 100 fly in a time of 1:06.14.
Staudacher won the 100 breast (1:09.41) as WSU took the top three places as Jodi Scott (Windsor, Ont./Riverside S.S.) was second (1:11.38) and Hill was third (1:11.98). Staudacher was third in the 200 IM (2:24.18), while Hill was second in the 100 back (1:03.99).
Freshman Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) and Rakouth finished 2-3 in the 50 free with times of 25.78 and 25.95. Freshman Brooke White (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) was second in the 100 free (55.70) with Danaher placing third (55.97).
The winning 400 free relay quartet consisted of White, Danaher, Burton and Koehler.
The Warriors will train for the GLIAC Championship which will be held Feb. 15-18 at Northern Michigan.
