Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad is in second place (out of nine schools) after the first day of the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship being held at Northern Michigan University's Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF) Pool.

The Warriors accumulated 114 points in Wednesday's three events and trail first place Grand Valley as the Lakers recorded 137 points. Trailing WSU are Indianapolis (83), NMU (60), Hillsdale (41), Ashland (34), Gannon (30), Findlay (26) and Lewis (24).

WSU took third place in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of junior Erin Hill (Holt, Mich.), sophomore Amber Staudacher (Rockford, Mich.), sophomore Katie Harrigan (Portage, Mich./Northern) and freshman Brooke White (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) had a time of 1:50.50.

In the 1000 free, freshman Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich./Brighton) placed second in an NCAA-B qualifying time of 10:37.65. Junior Mandy Burton (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) was fourth in a time of 10:45.13, also an NCAA-B qualifying time. Sophomore Tiffanie Laforet (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Annes) was ninth (11:05.31), while sophomore Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.) was 10th (11:05.89).

In the three-meter diving competition, WSU sophomore Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) led after the prelims and took home first place with a finals score of 400.35. Senior Lindsey O'Neill (Dearborn Hts., Mich./Crestwood) was fifth with a score of 346.55.

Competition continues Thursday morning with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m.
