Women's Swimming and Diving Earns First GLIAC Title

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Wayne State women's swimming and diving team captured its first GLIAC Championship in school history, finishing 56 points ahead of second-place Grand Valley State after the final day of competition on Saturday evening.

With both the women's and men's teams winning the conference titles, Wayne State becomes just the second school (Oakland) in GLIAC history to win both titles in the same year.

Melissa Duff won the GLIAC Women's Freshman of the Year award, and head coach Sean Peters was awarded the Women's Coach of the Year honor.

Duff won the 1650 free in a time of 17:38.31, her personal best of the season. Tiffanie Laforet (18:34.83) and Whitney Baker (18:45.61) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, and Ashley Scott came in 15th place (19:34.94).

In the 200 backstroke, Katie Harrigan placed second (2:08.32) and Erin Hill came in eighth (2:16.19).

Brooke White (54.30) took sixth in the 100 free, while Julie Danaher (55.05) finished eighth and Haintso Rakouth (54.96) won the "B" final to finish ninth overall in scoring.

Amber Staudacher (2:26.30) and Jodi Scott (2:30.18) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke. Ashley Scott came in fifth in the "B" final (13th in scoring) with a time of 2:37.91.

In the "B" final if the 200 fly, Stephanie Cummings came in first (ninth in scoring) with a time of 2:16.76, and Amanda Marshall finished fourth (12th in scoring) in 2:19.36.

The 400 free relay squad of White, Harrigan, Danaher, and Christy Koehler placed fourth in a time of 3:38.91.

Diver Erica Barczak will represent Wayne State at the NCAA Championships, which begin March 8 in Indianapolis.
