ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team began the 2008-09 season at the Oakland University Quadrangular Meet on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors competed against the host Grizzlies as well as the University of Cincinnati and Western Kentucky. WSU placed behind all three schools, but achieved several individual national qualifiers.

Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) and Natalia Buso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) both finished under the national cut in the 1000 freestyle in respective finishes of third (10:37.46) and fifth place (10:43.64). St. Andrew also came in fifth in the 500 free (5:13.49).

Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) finished under the NCAA "B" standard in the 200 butterfly with a second-place time of 2:08.33. She also placed sixth in 100 fly (59.87) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:12.40).

Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) won the three-meter diving competition (229.80) and came in second on the one-meter board (234.40).

The fifth-place 200 medley relay of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.), Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) posted a time of 1:50.13. Franklin also finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.06).

Wayne State's 400 free relay times were .37 seconds apart in sixth and seventh. The foursome of Nicole Knoblock (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower), Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), Buso, and Zalewska just edged out Stephanie Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale), Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich./Brighton), Chelsea Lord (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower), and Maggie Young (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's).

The Warriors will travel to Indianapolis for a quad meet with the host Greyhounds, Ashland, and Truman State next Friday and Saturday.
