DETROIT - In its first home meet of the season, the Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team earned a 99-point win over Calvin College (170-71) but narrowly edged Denison University (122.50-118.50) on Saturday at the Matthaei Aquatic Center.
The first-place 400 medley relay (3:58.58) of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.), Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) set the tone early for the Warriors, who won a total of six events on the afternoon.
Hogle finished in first place and earned an NCAA "A" qualifier in the 200 butterfly (2:06.79), and went one-two with Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.19, 1:58.43).
Roberts notched a "B" cut in her first-place 200 breaststroke swim (2:26.43), and Green took first in the 100 free (54.94).
In diving, Meghan Jaworski (Dundee, Mich.) placed first on the three-meter board (246.45) and finished second in the one-meter competition (222.60).
Other second-place finishers included Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) in the 50 free (25.33), Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) in the 400 individual medley (4:51.56), Franklin in the 200 backstroke (2:15.66), and Natalia Buso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 500 (5:13.26) and 1000 freestyle events, improving her national cut in the latter by nearly 13 seconds (10:28.46).
The Warriors wrapped up the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:41.58) by Green, Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison), Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), and Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland).
Wayne State's next competition will be Dec. 5-6 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
