Women's Swimming and Diving Has Strong First Day At EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Wayne State women's swimming and diving team set four school records and made multiple national qualifying times in the first day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday.

Ashley St. Andrew and Melissa Duff each earned NCAA "A" qualifying times in the 1650 free with times that shattered the school record, previously held by Duff (17:33.91).

St. Andrew placed fourth with a time of 17:14.63, while Duff was close behind in fifth (17:15.90). St. Andrew also established a new record in the 1000 free during her swim (10:22.19).

Katie Harrigan took ninth place in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.95.

Haintso Rakouth earned her first NCAA "B" cut of the season in the 100 free with an 11th-place time of 53.22. Julie Danaher also earned a "B" cut with a time of 53.54, finishing in 13th place.

Jodi Scott and Amber Staudacher finished just two seconds apart for 14th (2:27.40) and 19th (2:29.40), respectively, in the 200 breaststroke.

Elaina Hogle set a new WSU record in the 200 butterfly, taking third place with a time of 2:05.61 and earning an NCAA "A" cut. Laura Leix also beat the "A" standard with her fifth-place time of 2:07.13.

In the one-meter diving competition, Erika Barczak placed fifth (215.75) while Katie Rence and Venessa Torres took 10th (178.30) and 11th (172.30), respectively.

In the 13th and final event of the evening, the Warriors set a team record in the 400 freestyle relay, as the quartet of Rakouth, Danaher, St. Andrew, and Hogle finished sixth with a time of 3:34.38.

Wayne State and the rest of the field will return to the pool tomorrow (Dec. 2) at Eastern Michigan.
