Women's Swimming/Diving Looks Strong Heading Into Final Day At GLIACs

Preliminary Results

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State women's swimming and diving team had nine preliminary times qualify for Saturday's "A" finals, as the Warriors look for their second straight GLIAC title.

In the first event of the day, Mandy Burton (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) finished fifth (10:59.92) and Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.) eighth (11:06.43) in the 1000 free. Both qualified for tonight's "A" final.

Katie Harrigan (Portage, Mich./Central) finished sixth (2:11.88) to make the "A" final in the 200 backstroke, while three Warriors qualified for the "B" final - Burton in 10th (2:14.72), Erin Hill (Holt, Mich.) in 12th (2:15.28), and Jenny Howe (Wyandotte, Mich./Riverview) in 14th (2:17.45).

Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) finished second (54.30) and fifth (54.63), respectively, in the 100 freestyle.

Jodi Scott's (Windsor, Ont./Riverside S.S.) eighth-place time of 2:30.10 in the 200 breaststroke puts her in the "A" final, while Amber Staudacher (Rockford, Mich.) will swim the "B" final after finishing 10th (2:33.84)in the prelims.

Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) won the preliminary heat of the 200 butterfly in 2:09.39, qualifying for the "A" final with Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), who finished third (2:11.96). Elena Crowley (Detroit, Mich./Mercy) turned in a ninth-place time of 2:15.66.

The Wayne State 400 free relay team of Harrigan, Howe, Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison), and Hogle came in first place with a time of 3:41.63.

The final events of the GLIAC Championship will begin tonight at 6:00 p.m.
