Warrior Swimmers Make Waves In School Record Book

The men's and women's swimming teams combined to set seven new Wayne State varsity records this past weekend at the Eastern Michigan Inivtational.

The men's team, which finished second behind the host Eagles, set four new school records, including three relay marks. Bruno Blanco posted a time of 1:51.61 in the 200 butterfly, beating his own record from last season by 1.36 seconds.

The relay team of Tim Giblin, Blanco, Mathias Isaksson, and Per Bergstrom set a new record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.48, breaking the old mark of 1:27.04 set in 2002.

Matt Leix, Mathias Isaksson, Blanco, and Per Bergstrom shaved .53 seconds off the record set in 2004 for the 200 medley relay, swimming in a time of 1:33.93.

The narrowest margin for a new record came courtesy of the 400 medley relay team of Leix, Isaksson, Blanco, and Bergstrom, which posted a time of 3:26.70, topping the previous record by .11 seconds.

On the women's side, two Warriors broke their own records at the EMU Invitational. Amber Staudacher posted a new mark of 2:27.28 in the 200 breaststroke, breaking her record from last season by .21 seconds. Katie Harrigan swam the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:09.02, breaking her record from 2004 by 1.5 seconds.

The relay team of Erin Hill, Staudacher, Harrigan, and Julie Danaher set a new school record in the 400 medley relay (4:04.45), breaking the old mark by .75 seconds.

Both the men's and women's teams will start 2006 with conference opponent Grand Valley State on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Matthaei Aquatic Center.
