Southfield, Mich. - The Wayne State women's tennis team dropped at 4-3 non-conference dual match to visiting Division I opponent Oakland University at the Franklin Athletic Club on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) continued her impressive play extending her No. 1 singles winning streak to eight matches.
WSU (10-11) took 2-of-3 doubles matches from OU (3-7) to earn a 1-0 advantage due to Division I scoring system where two doubles wins only count as one point. The No. 1 freshman tandem of Gill and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) downed Lindsay Grimmer and Michelle Maxfield, 8-4, while freshmen Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) and Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) upended Jackie Dinicu and Rebecca Hopkins, 8-3, at the No. 3 slot.
Singles play proved to be the Warriors' undoing as the team dropped 4-of-6 matches which secured Oakland's 4-3 win. Gill had little trouble dispatching Grimmer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich./Taylor Truman) defeated Hopkins, 6-4, 6-0, at the No 6 slot. However, Vuksanovic fell to Amanda Scheer, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 while sophomore Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) fell in straight sets to Maxfield, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. Bradford took the first set in her No. 4 match but could not hang on as Gabrielle Gogas rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, win. Correa also fell in straight sets to Dinicu, 6-4, 6-0.
The Warriors close out the 2007-08 campaign with a non-conference dual match at Tiffin on Thursday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m.
