Tiffin, Ohio - The Wayne State women's tennis team reached the .500 mark with an 8-1 non-conference win over Tiffin on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) recorded a straight set 6-0, 6-0, shutout win over Teauana Long to extend her No. 1 singles winning streak to a team-high nine matches.
WSU (11-11) had little trouble in doubles competition winning all three matches from Tiffin (6-7) for a 3-0 lead. The No. 1 freshman tandem of Gill and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) defeated Ashley Hershner and Jessica Stefanov, 8-2, while sophomore Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich./Taylor Truman) downed Long and Beth Clark, 8-3, at No. 2. Freshmen Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) and Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) also upended Faith Greenawalt and Erika Bailey, 8-2, at the No. 3 slot to complete the sweep.
The Warriors closed out the vicotry taking 5-of-6 singles matches. Vuksanovic defeated Hershner, 6-1, 6-2, while Bradford outlasted Stefanov in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 10-2, at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles spots respectively. Correa dispatched Vickie Woods, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 while Bhatt took out Jessica Pivato, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Warriors close out the 2007-08 regular season campaign with a non-conference dual match at Findlay on Tue, April 15 at 3:00 p.m.
