Junior Steph Nicolson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover), who earned the 16th seed, won her first two matches and moves into day two competition. Nicolson defeated Audra Bartlett of Southern Indiana, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round before going to a third set tiebreaker with Grand Valley's Sarah Schweickart. The Laker won the first set, 6-3, but Nicolson came back with a 6-3 win of her own in set two, then won set three, 10-6.

Also winning in the first round was Amanda Pressotto (Trenton, Mich.). The junior beat Brooke Kennedy from Saginaw Valley (6-4, 6-1), but her luck in the second round wasn't as good as Nicolson's. Pressotto, who also faced a player from GVSU in eighth-ranked Allison Koopsen, took the first set 6-3, but lost 7-5 (5) and 10-6 in the last two sets.

Others competing for WSU were redshirt junior Dee Mays (Detroit, Mich./Utica) and junior Stephanie Van Tuyl (Riverview, Mich./Gabriel Richard). Mays lost to Marrisa Muchow from Ferris State, 6-1, 7-6 (1), while Van Tuyl fell 6-1, 6-1 to Indianapolis' Ashley Liles in the first round.

Nicolson will continue singles action Saturday while doubles play also starts with Nicolson and Van Tuyl teamed together and Pressotto and Mays set to play.
